Teaching Culture through Videos. Cas Study: Second Year LMD Students, Department of English, University of Bejaia

Abstract

الهدف من هذه الرسالة هو دراسة دور الفيلم في مادّة الحضارة من حيث قدرته على تعزيز محتوى المادّة وأهدافها. و هي تدرس بشكل خاص ما إذا كان استكمال مادّة الحضارة مع الفيلم يعزز المعرفة الثقافية و التفكير النّقدي لمتعلّمين اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبيّة. لهذا الغرض، تم إجراء دراسة حالة لطلاب السنة الثالثة في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية في جامعة بجاية. وللحصول على المعلومات اللازمة وتحليلها، تم استخدام ثلاث وسائل بحث وهي: استبيانات للطلاب، مقابلات مع الأساتذة ،و اختبارات للطلاب. كشفت نتائج هذه الدراسة أن الفيلم إلى حد كبير أداة فعّالة لتدريس الحضارة كونه قد لقي باستجابة من قبل الطلاب الذين هم متعلّمو بالسمع البصري و يحصلون على معظم فهمهم للثقافات الأجنبية من وسائل الإعلام المرئية. وعلاوة على ذلك، يتبين أن تكملة دروس الحضارة با الفيلم لا يزيد فقط من تحفيز الطلاب بل يساهم أيضاً في إثراء معارفهم و تطوير كفائتهم الثقافية. يستخلص من هذه النتائج أنه عندما يستخدم الفيلم بشكل مناسب، فإنّه يمكن أن يكون أداة فعالة لتدريس الحضارة. ف خصائصه البصرية والمسلّية تحّفز الطلاب وتزيد من مشاركتهم في الدرس. وعلاوة على ذلك، فإن المحتوى الثقافي الغني والجانب التفسيري للفيلم يطور المعرفة الثقافية ويعزِّز التفكير النّقدي لدى المتعلّمين ............................................................................................................................................................................. The present study attempts to investigate the effectiveness of the medium of film in teaching civilization to university students. More precisely, it addresses the issue of whether viewing a film in a class of civilization can foster students’ culture learning and critical thinking. For this purpose, a case study of third year students of the specialty Foreign Language Literature and Civilization in the Department of English at Bejaia University is undertaken. To obtain and analyze the necessary data three research instruments are utilized namely, students’ pre-questionnaire, a teachers’ interview, pretests and posttests, and students’ post-questionnaire. The results of this study reveal that films are to a considerable extent, effective materials for the teaching of civilization. They are positively perceived by the students who are audio-visual learners and get most of their understanding of foreign cultures from visual media. Furthermore, it is shown that supplementing the course of civilization with film not only increases students’ motivation and creates a relaxed classroom atmosphere but also enhances their culture learning and critical thinking. In the light of these findings, it is concluded that when film is used appropriately, it can reinforce civilization course content and objectives. Its visual and entertaining aspects motivate students and increase their engagement with the lessons. Moreover, its rich cultural content enriches students’ cultural knowledge and its interpretative aspect enhances their critical thinking.
